Porticos

Our most popular architectural element is the bold, doric columned stone Portico.  We have supplied these Porticos to many new builds as well as existing homes.  An elegant portico adds character and value plus a sense of gravitas.  Chilstone’s porticos can have a classical or contemporary look and made to fit all sizes.

Our own Architectural estimators provide free CAD drawings to your measurements for final approval by builders and architects.  It was the great Italian architect Palladio who invented the notion of applying a classical portico to a modern building.  Porticos can be a covered area leading up to the entrance of a building, or can be flat against the wall of the building to add architectural detail.

These photos show some of the recent projects I have been involved in in Ireland.  The big house in Wicklow shows a Portico with a pediment above.  The second photo, also in Wicklow is on a new build with bull nose steps each side of the landing in front of the door.  Both porticos in Westmeath were designed by the same Architect, Richard Wentges, one being a flat portico with broken pediment which enhances a long new extension to an existing house.   The second shows his drawing and design and then a photo of the house before with the old portico and then after with the beautiful new one. The portico completely changes the front of this existing 18th Century house.  With 4 large columns to the front, wrap around pilasters each side and 2 more pilasters at the back on each side, the curved steps are between sweeping ramp and twist coping.
